چکیده

Populations of red imported fire ants (RIFA; Solenopsis invtcta) have spread rapidly throughout 'the southeastern United States. RIF A, directly or indirectly, negatively affect many wildlife species, _ and northern bobwhite (Col'inus virginianus) appear to be particularly susceptible. We examined the effect of exposure to different numbers of RIF A for 15 and 60 seconds on body mass and survival of captive northern bobwhite chicks. Compared to unexposed birds, survival of chicks was reduced with exposure to as few as 50 RIF A for 60 seconds, or 200 RIF A for 15 seconds, and body mass was 'lower in chicks exposed to 200 RIF A for 60 seconds. Our reslllts support the hypothesis that quail populations can be adversely affected by direct exposure til RIF A. J. WILDL. MANAGE. 60(2):309-313

Red Imported Fire Ant Impacts on Northern Bobwhite Populations

The stability of Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in Texas, where high density polygyne red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) account for >50% of all (S. lnvicta) colonies, has been cited as a reason to repudiate impacts by this exotic species on Northern Bobwhite. We used two approaches to investigate the relationship between red imported fire ants and Northern Bobwhit...

Effects of Northern Bobwhite Habitat Management Practices on Red Imported Fire Ants

Management practices that create early successional plant communities through disturbance (discing and prescribed fire) often are prescribed for restoration of declining northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations. Because disturbance may facilitate invasion of exotic flora and fauna such as red imported fire ants (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta), we hypothesized that habitat management pract...

Response of Argentine ants and red imported fire ants to permethrin-impregnated plastic strips: foraging rates, colonization of potted soil, and differential mortality.

This study investigated the effects of the permethrin-impregnated plastic on ant mortality and foraging rates, and tested its potential for preventing ants from colonizing potted soil. Direct exposure to the plastic for as short as 1 min caused significant mortality of both red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and Argentine ants, Linepithema humile (Mayr); however, red imported fir...

Fire ant-detecting canines: a complementary method in detecting red imported fire ants.

In this investigation, detection dogs are trained and used in identifying red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and their nests. The methodology could assist in reducing the frequency and scope of chemical treatments for red imported fire ant management and thus reduce labor costs and chemical use as well as improve control and quarantine efficiency. Three dogs previously trained fo...

Use of Chemical Characters in Defining Populations of Fire Ants

The fire ants, Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri, were accidentally imported into the United States in the first half of this century from South America. In their adopted habitat the imported fire ants have thrived causing considerable medical and agricultural problems in the nine widely infested states of the south and southeast. The red imported fire ant, S. invicta was considered the domina...
